Zero Defect Zero Effect
A government-subsidised rating and handholding scheme that helps MSMEs manufacture quality products using clean and efficient technology — minimising wastage and adverse environmental impact.
The MSME Sustainable (ZED) Certification is an extensive drive by the Government of India to create awareness amongst MSMEs about Zero Defect Zero Effect (ZED) practices. The scheme motivates and incentivises MSMEs to acquire ZED Certification, encouraging them to champion quality while minimising their environmental footprint. ZED evaluates MSMEs on 20 comprehensive parameters.
Foundation-level assessment covering leadership, workplace practices, safety, timely delivery, quality, energy management and measurement.
Extends the assessment to human resources, daily work management, maintenance and calibration, process control, product quality, material management and environmental management.
Covers the complete ZED manufacturing framework, including supply chain, risk management, waste management, technology, natural resource conservation and corporate social responsibility.
Certain existing certifications may provide parameter exemptions or applicable recognition, subject to the prevailing ZED assessment framework and scheme requirements. The referenced manufacturing framework identifies:
The specific applicability of exemptions should be verified against the current ZED guidelines and assessment requirements before assessment.
Register your MSME on the ZED portal and select your target level.
Complete a self-assessment questionnaire across the 14 parameters.
Work with a consultant to close identified gaps ahead of assessment.
An assessor reviews your submitted evidence and documentation.
An on-site assessment verifies practices against the ZED parameters.
You receive your Bronze, Silver or Gold ZED rating.
Ongoing handholding support to progress toward the next level.
ZED certification is government-subsidised, so the actual cost to your business depends on your MSME category, target level and the subsidy applicable at the time of registration. We’ll walk you through current subsidy rates and the documentation — typically registration certificates, production records and basic quality/safety documentation — needed for assessment.
Zero Defect Zero Effect — a Ministry of MSME scheme encouraging manufacturing that is both defect-free and environmentally responsible.
ZED is designed primarily for manufacturing MSMEs, assessed across quality, technology, delivery, safety and environmental parameters.
The levels represent increasing performance and handholding maturity across the 14 ZED parameters, from baseline (Bronze) to sustained excellence (Gold).
No — ZED is a separate, MSME-focused government scheme. Many MSMEs pursue both ZED and relevant ISO standards such as ISO 9001.
We handle the registration, gap assessment and handholding support end to end.
